The Brewster Theater Company Brings “la Famiglia” to the Stage with “Over the River and Through the Woods”

Play humorously pits family, old-world tradition against allure of modern-day career success

BREWSTER, NY – The Brewster Theater Company announces its presentation of Joe DiPietro’s “Over the River and Through the Woods,” at St. Andrew’s Church in Brewster, NY.  Show dates are February 17, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m.  Admission for these performances is free, but donations are graciously accepted.

Brewster Theater Company will also host a Dinner Theater in conjunction with the show on Saturday, February 18th at St. Andrew’s Church, Brewster, NY.  Proceeds from the Dinner Theater will help support Brewster Theater Company in their efforts to continue to offer quality, small stage productions to the community, free of charge.  Tickets for the Dinner Theater are $15 and audiences will enjoy an Italian buffet, a performance of ‘Over the River and Through the Woods’, raffles, and other activities.  The festivities and dinner begin at 6 p.m., performance at 7:30 p.m.

In the Italian culture, the family – la famiglia – is the root of life and an emblem of pride.  Familial roles and responsibilities are priority one, and especially respected among the older immigrant generation.  So is the case with Nick’s family.

Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey.  His parents retired and moved to Florida, but his lovingly clingy, yet quirky, grandparents are still in spitting distance.  Every Sunday Nick eats dinner with both sets of grandparents.  This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job in Seattle as a marketing executive – a job he’s been waiting for his whole career.  The catch: no more Sunday dinners at home with grandma and grandpa.  Not happy with this news, the grandparents set off a series of comical events to try and to keep Nick at home where he belongs.

“Today’s generation is on over-drive, and many of the middle class are feeling the pinch as families spend less time connecting and more time working,” said Lizzie Loomis, director.  “This show could not come at a better time.  Who doesn’t need a little dose of love and warmth in February? The traditional warmth and humor of this play are meant to rekindle the spirit of home and the importance of family ties.”

Directed by Lizzie Loomis, the cast includes:

Ø      Jude Pucillo from Lake Peekskill, NY will play Nick

Ø      Karen Muendell from Shrub Oak, NY will play Caitlin, Nick’s potential love interest

Ø      Kiki Dever from Brewster, NY will play Emma, Nick’s paternal grandmother
